Amaltas Yellow

The heat and dust of the long Indian summer is often an ordeal… a season that very easily sucks away energy and zeal for most things. Despite a few summer specials that try pumping some enthusiasm — vacations for kids or pulpy mangoes for most — the season is mostly a draining few months. Long days of a long summer with an all consuming sun emerging early on and staying until late, leaving a land dry and its people devoid of reasons to perk up.

No outdoor activities, barely any celebrations or festivities (most fall outside the summer months), and a parched sense of life around. Garden plants plead for twice the water, grass burns pale, spring flowers have wilted and perhaps, so does my spirit in the monotony of that stifling ennui.

And in this burning ground grows the Amaltas. With its bounty of blooming yellow flowers, a striking gold — almost challenging the bigger yellow in the sky.

Delightful bunches of simple, fragile, yellow petals, dangling with ease and innocence. An instant visual energy booster that peps up the mood. You find them lining streets, blazing like the sun, brightening up a dull day. You find its tokens of joy as droppings — a petal or two on your car windscreen, or a spread of yellow litter carpeting the pathways.

While most of the outdoors grows crumbly brown and pale, an Amaltas’s brightness is an accent that lifts the scene up, a brilliant contrast with the vast open blue sky, and the idea of life as it blooms amidst its own green base.

The exuberant yellow tree in the summer-slapped plains of north India is a reminder of a happier spirit. A natural version of the ubiquitous yellow smiley face symbol.
