Semioticians analyze symbols, so for this series, we’ve asked 25 of our semio colleagues from around the world to explicate the symbolism of… one of their own tattoos.
This tattoo is very primary to me. It’s here to be part of me.
The ocean is the cradle of life. The octopus is a way to remain connected to it, nourishing this relationship.
Also, the octopus is the living thing that best adapts to its environment. It can modify its appearance, change colors and shapes — either to better match with their surrounding or, on the contrary, to become highly visible.
This tattoo works like a totem for me. It influences me to better adapt to different contexts and keep evolving without forgetting where we all come from. I sometimes think about it when I’m stuck and wonder how the octopus would react.
That’s my symbolic rationale. But I also decided to get the tattoo because I found it aesthetically pleasing; it was on a whim. The decision was half-semiotic, half-instinctive.
