The blocking of this brief scene, in which Mike (Dennis Quaid), Cyril (Daniel Stern), and Moocher (Jackie Earle Haley) celebrate their team’s unexpected win in Indiana University’s Little 500 bicycle race, near the end of Peter Yates’ Breaking Away, is endearingly gauche.

The three friends link arms, Moocher leaps into the air, Cyril kicks his ungainly knees up a bit… and that’s about it. The Cutters have never experienced success at anything; as a result, they have no repertoire of bromantic chest-bumps, virile backflips, or cool end-zone dances upon which to draw.

Even in their moment of victory, they look like directionless losers. We love them for that.
