Down the tube

The PHOTO OP series — to which SEMIOVOX has invited our semiotician colleagues from around the world to contribute — analyzes photos that we’ve snapped while “off the job.”

This Transport for London (TFL) advertising uses the codes of cutesy to hide its injunction (an authoritative call) – OFFER YOUR SEAT. Who is it aimed at and why is there a need for this campaign? You would think the British, who are known for their politeness, don’t need to be reminded about offering seats to others.

This is another TFL messaging in the tube carriage about behaviour policing on public transport. This one avoids the cutesy and goes straight to the legal implications of sexual harassment. It also encourages witnesses to report sexual harassment. Does it give women comfort and assurance? Does it dissuade potential harassers? We will never know.

Another injunction – to be considerate to others. These images reinforce my view that ideas that we consider banished in the cause of progressivism just reappear in a different format. TFL’s messaging has all the hallmarks of religious messaging, good (bright) vs bad (red and black), use of sun rays and halos.
